My why

I’m a strong believer in assisting and empowering other people, particularly the most vulnerable. I get fulfilment from witnessing steps to a transformed life. My work is inspired by the quotable quote, “The life I touch for good or ill will touch another life, and in turn another, until who knows where the trembling stops or in what far place my touch will be felt.” ~ Frederick Buechner.

I’m grateful for the time that I spent with my young children as a stay at home mum during my early years in Australia. My plan was to return to paid work and develop my career at some point. However, I doubted that my previous banking job was my purpose in life. I needed to pursue my purpose. But what is my purpose?

I received a few banking job offers when I started applying for jobs. None of them suited our daily family schedules. I decided to try something new after some introspection and time in prayer. I found a disability support worker role despite my limited experience in the sector. This was more fulfilling than trying to persuade someone to get a credit card they do not need for me to meet my KPIs. I thought I could do more in the human services sector if I obtained the correct qualifications. Social work was high up on my list of study options however, the required 1000 unpaid practical work hours sounded an uphill battle, in addition to looking after my young children and continuing with one person income to cater for our family needs. I met someone who had previously been a bank manager, now turned social worker. The conversation that followed further gave me the confidence to study social work after some research and consultation. Social work has opened several doors for me than I ever imagined, and I am now expecting more. Social work practice core values and believes align with mine. I am passionate about working with and on behalf of other people to enhance their wellbeing.

Going back to the why, as a social worker, I can positively impact one person through my work which will in turn touch another and there is a domino effect within families, communities, and generations to come.
